Spilled Seeds Before the Goldfinch-

English 原文
Only a thin layer of seeds rattled at the bag's torn bottom. Ruby inhaled the nutty dust escaping the paper roll, blinking as the smell coated her tongue. Hugo, seated beside her, noticed the raised wood grain perfume the air with warm resin. She hoped to lure a yellow finch, whereas he aimed to complete his species tally before lunch. Across the park, smoky cinnamon drifted from a harvest festival booth, sharpening their impatience with sweet distraction. Both pairs of eyes tracked sparrows showering hulls that formed a sour mash beneath the perch. A tangle of string knotted around the bag mouth made careful pouring difficult.
Earthy steam rose from the soil after a sprinkler cycle, mixing with husk powder that clung inside their nostrils. Ruby stood, maneuvered the three paces to the feeder, and tilted the bag. The water dish under the feeder gleamed crystal clear, and its faint mineral aroma fused with floating chaff. A sudden runner pounded the gravel; the vibration made her elbow jump and deepened the tear. Seeds sprayed out, throwing a roasted-sunflower scent across the grass like cracked pepper. Hugo smelled the waste first and lunged forward, pinching the torn corner so nothing more fell.
If the bag tore further, the last grains would vanish before the bright visitor touched ground. Several handfuls had been lost already, and their shared project was at risk. Ruby's shoulders lifted with a breath smelling of mint candy, and Hugo folded the bag edge inward with steady fidelity. He balanced the narrowed mouth under her palm, and she dripped a careful trickle onto the platform's far edge, away from pigeons. A citrus-like smell burst from cracked husks as the goldfinch landed, and Hugo captured the moment with his camera. Fine seed dust lined the groove his thumb had pressed into the folded paper, leaving a pale stripe across the smooth surface.
