English 原文
"Still red," Petra said.
Petra's hip bumped the locked turnstile bar, the cold metal pressing against her coat. The fare display above the card reader showed 200 units, and the small screen demanded 150 more before access. Gemma leaned against a pillar a few steps away, headphones on, a paperback open. A plush panda with a serene stitched smile peeked from Gemma’s bag, its round head wobbling with each vibration rolling through the hall. Petra shifted her weight, coins rattling in her pocket like dull marbles. She jogged across the tiled hall to the recharge machine; each footfall rang on the footbridge stairs that bridged the two halves of the station. The overhead display blinked an express train alert, orange digits ticking down toward departure.
Petra pressed the first coin into the slot. The machine drew it in, the screen adding 50 units. She had 250 now—still short. She slipped a second coin forward, yet the mechanism jammed halfway, trapping the piece between two metal ridges. Tension ran along her shoulders as she nudged it with a fingertip; the coin refused to budge. Behind her, Gemma closed her book and walked over, curiosity pulling her forward. A splash of spray-paint artistry on the casing showed waves and gulls, but the jam created a quieter conflict: balance against time. If the machine accepted one more coin, the gate would turn. Gemma dug in her pocket, produced another 50-unit piece, and slid it along the edge of her panda’s ear toward Petra like a tiny puck.
Petra used the stubby corner of Gemma’s coin to loosen the stuck one; both pieces dropped, chimed, and disappeared together. The balance leapt to 350 at once, and a soft tone was followed by a bright green arrow on the display. The express departure board now read one minute, yet the threshold had been crossed. Petra ran, Gemma pacing beside her, backpacks bouncing against their spines. They reached the gate, breathing hard from the sprint. The bar spun under Petra’s palm, and the lamp that had been red now shone green.
