English 原文
Clink-clink-clink, the reception pen’s chain rebounded against its socket, and each return traced three perfect arches in the amber lamp’s glow. The pattern repeated after every signature in front of Inez, as steady as the digital display that blinked numbers farther down the hallway while a cool fluorescent wash left a sharp shadow edge behind every moving shoulder.
A minute later she moved to the form-filling table, joining the multitude of clipboards already stacked there. Her parent leafed through a magazine nearby, the pages catching the same light in bright strips, and a phone on the waiting chairs burst with an ebullient melody before falling silent again. The draft from the automatic door lifted the loose consent sheet, so Inez slid a folded clinic brochure beneath it. The paper still fluttered; she added a thick waiting-room magazine. The stack rose another fraction, and the clipboard’s metal clip gaped open. Trying to press it shut, she tucked a glossy leaflet on top, but the clip sprang free and the papers slid sideways, scattering like toys falling from a worn jalopy’s open trunk.
Inez paused, then pinched the magazine’s spine and drew that single item out. The weight eased; the earlier brochure and leaflet settled flat, and the clip closed without force. The pen chain now sagged in an uneven droop—its tidy arches had existed only while her forearm pulled at a fixed distance; she understood the pattern had been no mystery after all. She finished the signature quickly, handed over the clipboard, and carried the tidy papers to the counter. A faint ridge left by the first, heavier marks caught the slant of the desk lamp as she smoothed the top sheet with her palm.
