Clyde pressed two fingers to the grass depression, and Rosa tapped the map, counting paces aloud against the stream’s soft drone. They now aimed toward a tilted marker stone tucked under overlapping roots rather than the mossy trunk. At step twelve, both paused: Rosa felt the ground change from spongey clay to firm crunch, and Clyde noticed the birdsong grow clearer as branches thinned overhead. Without words, they split the work—Rosa steadied the rattling map board while Clyde kept the compass away from the buried pipe’s pull. Rosa pressed her finger on the map’s tiny circle while Clyde pointed the compass toward the hillock.
