Felix crouched near the wobbling tower, a fourth, flat-sided piece rocking in his palm like a slow metronome. He set it on top; a faint graze rang where slate met slate, then the whole pile quivered. The underside held a sneaky hollow—it refused to lie still. Felix lifted the stone again, rapped it against the larger base, and listened for a dull tone that might validate a flatter face. A short creak of leather came from his belt pouch as he drew out a trowel. With two quick scrapes he began to excavate a thinner chip from packed earth beside the slope-face outcrop, pebbles pinging off the metal blade.

Before he could slide the new chip under the shaky layer, a sudden burst of wind rattled the nearby scrub and sent the column clacking. The top stone rolled away with a clatter, bounced over gravel, and disappeared behind a sage bush. Felix sprang after it; boots hissed on loose grit while the unfinished stack groaned behind him. At the bush he found the runaway disc half buried, still spinning in a shallow dip. As he fished it out, Bea—an adult hiker pausing to photograph the wide valley—called a greeting from farther up the trail. Her camera’s shutter pop echoed off the rock face, persuading Felix to lift his head for an awkward wave. Those few breaths were enough time for the wind to work again.

When he stepped back to the bend, only a single base stone remained; the others lay scattered, ticking softly as they settled down on the hardened crust. Afternoon cloud had thickened, muting colours so grey and rust looked alike. Felix could no longer rely on sight, so he changed method. Kneeling, he flipped each candidate stone, tapping with his knuckles until a low, even thud answered. One broad piece felt steady; he slid the thin chip beneath it, and the contact produced a firm hush instead of a rattle. He pressed the stack once more to validate balance, then left the trowel wedged in the soil as a spare support. He took two paces downhill for a side view, and behind him wind hissed through the sage, pebble after pebble continuing to patter across the path.
