The blanket’s centre felt strangely chilly although the exposed cloth dazzled under mid-afternoon glare. Dante planned to line up two paper plates so he and Maren could start lunch before the creeping tree shadow reached them. The basket had been positioned on the uphill edge earlier, its lid propped open like a small back-lit wall. He slid the first plate toward the uphill edge, yet a shaft of brightness showed the hidden ridge beneath. The plate rocked, caught the slope, and glided downhill until it touched Maren’s elbow with a quiet scrape of reflected-gleam. Maren steadied the dish, but the flare of light on its rim warned Dante the second would follow the same runaway path. He paused, waiting for the gust that rippled the wind-side cloth to fade before releasing the next plate, yet his timing slipped.

A courageous terrier tethered to the basket suddenly lunged at a squirrel silhouette racing along the grass border. The pull dragged the wicker weight sideways and threw glaring bands across every container before stopping. Dante’s hands flashed forward, urgently catching the lid before it could slam against the glowing plates. In the same instant a meteoric peach shot from the uphill stack and rolled downhill. It clipped a potpourri jar Maren had packed to freshen the basket, and dried petals scattered into the bright air. The burst paused both friends, and a wordless kind of diplomacy began as their fingers rearranged heavy jars first, light plates later. If they had kept sliding cups downhill again, the slope would have swallowed their lunch before the next glare-filled gust. By starting with weightier items and waiting for each cloth ripple to fade, they built a stable, shaded eating line.

Sunshine still burned on the open cloth, yet the creeping wedge of cool shadow now protected the sandwiches near the uphill edge. Dante glanced toward the park-path bench, estimating ten paces for the forgotten water bottle, but waited until the terrier quit panting. Beyond the path, a glare-washed hilltop framed the park, but neither friend looked up today. Maren opened the basket’s interior flap, letting dim glow leak inside so she could retrieve forks without shifting the plates again. Between each gust they ate in quiet rhythm, elbows tracing bands of brightness across the cloth before the next shadow-edge drifted over. Unseen, the peach kept drifting through glare toward an ant line beyond the blanket’s edge.
