The Trail That Chose the Seeds-

English 原文
A pale snail had inched halfway across the potting bench before Sam noticed the dim glimmer of its shell. Seven torn seed packets lay around the visitor, and their tiny contents rolled against his wrists whenever he shifted weight. A hairline crack, left by a mild earthquake months earlier, split the boards beneath the packets and trapped a few wandering seeds. Sparrows on the tin roof seemed to jubilate with quick wing-beats, shaking warm dust that floated through the single shaft of light. The dried starfish on the window ledge offered a quiet reminiscence of seaside days, its arms chalky against the glass. An adult gardener whistled outside while watering rows of lettuce, and a square of faded rope mesh, once a safety net for climbing beans, dangled beside the open doorway. Warm air pressed against Sam’s shoulders, yet the stone floor cooled the arches of his feet.
Only after the snail paused beside a mixed pile did Sam realise the packets for basil and oregano had spilled together, and the small sorting tray still needed twenty seeds of one kind before sundown. He pinched eight round seeds that shone darker than the rest and dropped them into the shallow groove—too few, and their scent told nothing. He carried two more seeds to the drying hook, rubbed them near the hanging basil stems, and the sharper dried scent misled his nose; seven extra seeds joined the first batch, yet doubt still crept through his stiff elbows. Sam considered tipping everything back and starting again, then noticed a glistening trail where the snail had slid over the mixture.
That trail held faint oil from crushed basil skins, so he followed its damp shine, lifting one seed at a time until the tray counted twenty-two. The twentieth seed tapped the wooden mark he had scratched earlier, and the threshold stood reached in a single breath. Sam scooped the snail onto his palm, stepped over the cool threshold, and placed the creature under the thyme stalks; as he walked away, one basil seed clung unnoticed to the cuff of his shirt.
