Warren tilted the chocolate sauce bottle over Forrest’s towering strawberry-and-vanilla cone. Warm room air had thinned the syrup, and the first squeeze burst forward in a slippery ribbon that missed the scoop. The dark line splashed onto the stainless counter, shone like wet kelp, and spread under the tasting-spoon tray. Metal met syrup; the tray slid a finger’s breadth, bumped the wire tower of waffle cones, and knocked one cone free. The hollow cone rolled toward the display glass. Warren lunged; a rubber manatee keychain on his belt loop slapped the glass as he caught it. Behind him a lid rose, releasing a brief squall of freezer air, while a sticky trace now marked the pane.

He passed the cone over to Forrest and stepped away from the topping shelf. Outside, leftover sleet from an earlier shower still peppered the stone step; each grain caught the amber sun beneath the awning. Warren wiped the counter with a damp cloth; a light scatter of sprinkles was swept toward the drain ridge. The waffle iron at the far corner had finished its hiss, and a fresh cone cooled on the rolling mandrel. He transferred it onto a holder, then helped Pia, who balanced two cups, by sliding the napkin dispenser closer to her elbow. The sticky patch of sauce still marked the glass, and he had no hand free to clean it. He drifted toward the seating ledge, where melting drops on Forrest’s cone asked for quick licks.

While Forrest compared bite marks on the leaning scoops, the sprinkles jar Warren had nudged earlier edged along the untouched syrup. Glass kissed plastic; the wandering jar tapped the chocolate bottle and rolled it across the shelf until it nudged Warren’s wrist. He caught the bottle in mid-spin, angled the nozzle slightly, and released a slow ribbon that curved over the top scoop. He flicked a clean spoon under the jar to wedge it away from the syrup, halting further drift. Across the stainless surface, a thin bead of chocolate crept toward the drain groove.
