"The hoop is heavy," Gwen said.

She lifted the coat-hanger frame from the low table, sunlight sliding along its rim and throwing a glare across the bucket surface. A spray of mimosa leaves beside the fence trembled in the same glare, their thin shadows quivering over the grass. Gwen dipped the hoop until the entire wire sank below the foamy layer, then drew it upward. She had moved too fast; the soap film tore like a bright curtain and dripped in a quick waterfall. Only a faint aspiration followed as dozens of tiny bubbles burst and vanished near the rim. Her shoulders lowered and she steadied her grip before trying again for a slower lift.

She slowed the second lift; this time a thin, shimmering sheet covered the frame, bands of light forming a moving map. Yet a narrow streak appeared along one corner and split the film after only three steps toward the wind-shadow wall. Drops cascaded to the ground, wasting more solution and leaving a widening slippery patch along the grass. Gwen crouched to inspect the frame and finally felt the rough solder joint: a grainy ridge no thicker than a pencil lead. The small flaw had been hidden beneath the shifting suds all afternoon until this moment. She lifted a drinking straw, dipped its end, and let a bead of liquid glide along the ridge. Only a fraction of the bucket’s mixture still covered the metal after the extra coat dripped away.

Holding her breath, she lifted again and angled the film sideways while walking across the sunlit centre. The sheet remained intact, rainbow bands sliding downward like slow lava toward the lower edge. Near the fence a quiet puff of wind bowled in and pushed the membrane forward. It bulged, detached, and floated off as a wobbling dome, drifting over the mimosa before bursting against a dark plank. Spray glittered in the glare, then fell like a tiny waterfall onto the leaves below. Gwen examined the hoop once more, then set it on the table beside the bucket. Soapy fingerprints dappled the solder joint, and a crescent stain darkened the grass beneath the dipping station.

第二次她放慢速度，薄而閃亮的膜鋪滿整個圓框，光帶如動態地圖。可是一條細痕在一角出現，還沒走到無風牆前就把薄膜劈成兩半。滴水傾瀉到地面，浪費更多溶液，在草面上留下一片滑溜的水跡。她蹲下檢查，終於摸到焊點——像鉛筆芯般細的顆粒凸起。整個下午那小缺口都隱在肥皂泡下，她才剛發現。她拿起一根吸管，沾液後讓一滴肥皂水沿著焊點滑過。多餘的塗層滴落後，桶裡剩下的溶液只覆蓋金屬邊緣的一小部分。

她屏住呼吸再度抬起圓框，並在走過陽光區時把膜斜向內側。薄膜保持完整，虹彩帶像慢熔的岩漿往下滑動。靠近籬笆時，一股輕風吹來，把膜向前推去。薄膜鼓起、脫離圓框，變成擺動的圓頂，越過含羞草後撞上木板才破裂。水珠在強光中閃爍，再像小瀑布灑落葉面。她再次檢視圓框，然後把它放回桶旁的桌面。焊點上留有肥皂指紋，蘸水區下方的草地出現一道深色新月形污痕。
