English 原文
Three faint sprays remained in Greer’s plastic bottle; the water rattled inside and tapped the walls with a hollow tick. He crouched in square C-3 while the soft rasp of his brush slid across chalk that sighed at every pass. Beyond the grid, Zander’s trowel kept up a steady hum, yet Greer listened only to a shallow spiral peeking from the grey-white layer. He hoped to darken its outline with one quick mist, so the nozzle hissed and the dust drank the moisture. His next scrape met a lump that rang like porcelain against metal. The nodule sat wider than a coin and heavier than it looked, blocking any further sweep. He levered at it; the chalk showed stubborn resilience and answered each shove with one dull thunk.
The blade slipped, and a scatter of chalk chips pattered against the cotton grid line. The loosened cord quivered, freed from the stake it had been fixed to, and the thin wood rod toppled with a flat knock onto the tool roll. The roll flipped; the brush clattered downhill and nudged the nearly empty bottle. Plastic thudded on chalk, the cap spun with a brief whirr, and the last trickle splashed, turning fresh powder into sticky paste that crept toward the spiral. The small disaster echoed around the pit like a slow drum. If the lump had budged earlier, the string would have stayed tight. Greer lifted the stone at last and felt its solid weight; the very bulk that had blocked him could anchor the slack cord. Acting like a patient sculptor, he laid the nodule on the vibrating line. The tremor stopped, chips stopped rattling, and his brush whispered again. Wet paste slid aside, uncovering a double curve that arched back like a seahorse neck — the day’s small bounty appearing millimetre by millimetre.
Zander’s trowel paused, its scrape fading to silence, while Greer sketched the outline in the specimen log before the damp chalk could dry. The educator’s distant footsteps thudded on the wooden step, and the pair adjusted their kneeling pads without looking up. The weighty nodule remained on the cord, a quiet counterpoint that now kept the grid straighter than before. At the rim, a gopher burst from its tunnel, scattered loose grit, and darted along the spoil heap toward the open grass.
