The rubber bumper on the cart tugged at Max’s palm while a muffled rumble from a distant compressor rolled through the frozen-food aisle. He swung the glass freezer door wide; the fan behind it thrummed and cooler air brushed his sleeves like scattered flour. Nora guided the cart forward, its front wheel bumping with a hollow thunk against a metal floor seam before refusing to swivel. Packages inside the cabinet rustled as the fan speed shifted. They were already talking it over—peas or mixed vegetables—when the ceiling speaker gave a soft chime, and the faint pitter-patter of produce sprayers drifted from across the store.

The hiss grew steadier, joined by the rhythmic tap of droplets on plastic leaves. Nora’s head turned toward the sound. “It may splash the fresh herbs,” she said, stepping away. Max followed, their cart stranded, the freezer door still half-open behind them. Over in produce, the mist faded; a bread slicer near the bakery began its low growl, and somewhere a scanner beeped in quick bursts. By the time they hurried back, their absence had allowed warm aisle air to pour into the cabinet. A thin white skin now frosted the door frame, and an alarm buzzer pulsed in uneven bursts from a covered speaker above the shelf. The only virtue of the jammed wheel, now sparkling with tiny ice beads, was that it had kept the cart exactly where they left it. A food magazine beside the freezer, pages fluttering under the vent’s breeze, featured an article about the virtue and vice of sugar, its glossy cover rippling with each fan surge.

Max grabbed the rear rail and heaved. The wheel rattled free; the motion shook droplets loose from the frosted frame, and the alarm fell silent once he nudged the door fully shut. Cold water trickled along the tiles, seeping beneath the freed wheel. As they rolled away, a single blueberry that had stuck to Nora’s glove earlier slipped from the cart basket and spun, dark and shiny, in a widening spiral across the damp floor.
