Pressure pushed through his shoulders; the sheet flexed, rose, and dipped like a tiny bridge under strain.

A gust came from the open corridor by the reptile house, flicking the free corner of the page upward and bending its path into a short, curved trajectory. Yves caught the edge before it flew, yet the sudden twist scraped dark dust across the untouched half reserved for the giraffe. The transformation looked permanent: smeared gray shadows covered part of the space he still needed. He paused, feeling a warm pulse in his fingers from gripping too hard, then shifted tactics. Sliding the sheet sideways, he decided to reverse the order—trace the giraffe first while wind stayed calm, then return to finish the deeper track. Only the lower arc of the rhino mold remained blank, yet the paper threatened to tear if pressed again. Yves spread his palm to steady the worn fibres and used shorter strokes, accepting a faint outline rather than a perfect match. When he lifted the page, both animals stood visible—giraffe neat, rhino pale, graphite dust scattered where compromise sat. A drip from the nearby water feature landed beyond the margin, leaving a single silver spot that cooled fast on the dark surface. Yves placed the graphite stick beside the steel ruler on the low curb and straightened his legs toward the cottage path.
