English 原文
Petra’s fingertips brushed bare wood where a pair of scissors usually dangled beside the stack of flat gift-wrap boxes. She bent closer, searching the narrow shelf until her forehead almost touched the warm honey-toned cardboard. The scissors had been removed earlier for sharpening, and only a pale outline marked the wood. Briar waited opposite the counter, holding two golden pastries on a paper tray and watching the queue shift behind them. A staff member waved an apology but stayed busy boxing other orders, so Petra decided to wrap the pastries herself. She slid one flat box forward and began folding along the scored lines, yet the front corner sprang open again. The missing scissors meant the ribbon remained attached to its spool, adding gentle tension that tugged against every crease.
Petra pinched the rebellious corner harder, pressing her thumb along the warm edge as if smoothing a sheet of soft wax. For a breath the fold lay flat at a turning point between rigid and loose cardboard. For a moment, the fold lay flat at a turning point between rigid and loose cardboard. That sudden jerk nudged the light wooden spool toward the edge of the packaging table. Gravity carried it over the lip, and the spinning cylinder tapped a toothpick cup on the lower shelf. The cup rocked once, released a faint rattle, and brushed a sample plate whose crumbs had attracted a single wasp. Startled, the striped insect lifted into the amber light, circling above Petra’s hands like a slow ember.
Briar’s elbow rose instinctively, yet Petra stayed still and lowered her palm onto the rolling spool before it could tumble farther. The contact slowed the cylinder, and the ribbon loops slackened while the wasp drifted toward the doorway breeze. With the danger of another roll gone, Petra folded the stubborn flap once more. She held the crease for three heartbeats, while warm air from the floor vent softened the cardboard. When she lifted her thumb, the flap stayed flat and the ribbon waited, loose enough to slide around the corner without strain. Beside the finished box, the ribbon loops kept swaying in tiny arcs above the honey-coloured tabletop.
