Dry grass scratched Mae’s ankles as she stepped from the firm centre toward a bright patch beside the flag. The metal compass warmed quickly; glare on its clear cover made her narrow her eyes while the red tip swung. She had studied the hand-drawn map clipped to the post, so the next waypoint should lie beyond the eastern trees. Shifting leaf shadows wove a restless tapestry across the dial, yet the needle finally aimed at a line that cut straight over the clearing. She walked three paces, a small wooden ornament on the lanyard tapping her wrist, and the pointer seemed to plummet thirty degrees as if tugged underground. A faint depression caught the light; dried stems collapsed inward over it, but she kept moving until the wobble slowed again.

At the mossy edge, dim shade wrapped her hands, and thin mist clouded the plastic cover where warm air met damp bark. The blurred markings forced her to pause; she wiped the lens with her sleeve, then lifted the compass higher so another shaft of light could strike it. A surplus of overlapping footprints dotted the soft ground, yet no numbered stone showed. She repeated the reading, now holding the instrument chest-high instead of waist-high. The needle still jerked whenever she drifted near that sunken line, but away from it the pointer eased, settling within two degrees. The marker numbers had been painted in bold strokes once, and a distant gleam between trunks suggested their faded colour. If the shade grew thicker, she would rely on that quick glimpse instead of the stubborn dial.

Heat kept working behind her. Warm metal rose from the clearing’s brightest circle; each time a breeze shifted, cooler air swept over the compass, and a film of moisture formed again. She angled the cover toward the glow rather than away, letting the fog slide aside. A water bead rolled off, fell onto the corner of the map, and spread like ink across the paper grid. Mae pinned the damp sheet under a small stone, stopping further creep, then stepped six paces north of the depression before testing the bearing once more. The reading now matched the shining stone ahead, so she strode toward it. At the same moment, on the hillock, Glen shaded his eyes against the same glare; a cloud drifted past the sun, and a pale pebble spun downhill toward the stream.

熱度仍在她身後作用。空地最明亮的位置持續加熱金屬外殼；每當一陣涼風掠過，較冷空氣再度覆上羅盤，薄霧又起。她把罩面轉向光源，讓霧氣滑到一側。一滴水珠順勢落下，滴在地圖角落，像墨漬般擴散。Mae 用石頭壓住濕紙，阻止水跡蔓延，再向北離開凹痕六步後重新測向，這次的方位與前方那塊發亮石頭一致，於是她朝它大步走去。同一時間，在小丘上的 Glen 用手掌遮光；雲影掠過太陽，一顆淡色小石持續旋轉著滾向溪流。
