English 原文
Reese twisted the sticky ketchup cap beside the patio railing, and the bottle only groaned against his palm. He pulled harder, and the glass base jerked sideways; the rim bumped a spoon, metal slid across the plate, and water rang when the spoon tapped the glass. Ice shifted, releasing a brittle ping that made nearby chairs tremble on their hinges. Sauce never appeared, and Reese let the bottle stand, its base humming faintly on the stone tabletop. Beyond the railing, folding chairs rattled under a rolling gust that shook the umbrella poles.
Inside, the bar counter hissed under the coffee machine while droplets ticked against the chrome hood. Reese waited for the steam to thin, then lifted a damp napkin from a freshly folded stack. Condensed water drummed on the marble edge before slipping into the deep sink. On the way back, he paused at the entrance clipboard, listening as the hanging pen knocked a soft rhythm. At Joy’s booth he helped fold stiff napkins into cranes, their paper wings rustling like tiny sails. A passing salad plate carried an herb garnish that looked like a leafy garden swaying under hurried footsteps. Nearby, a broom’s bristles rasped, scattering crumbs that dispersed toward the aisle with every sweep. Reese raised two fingers to communicate he was heading outside, and the hostess answered with a quick nod. Steam at the order window cooled into droplets; that quiet metamorphosis drummed on metal before Reese stepped through the doorway again.
A gust pushed across the patio as Reese reached his chair, and the ketchup bottle slid toward the table’s edge. He caught it, wrapped the damp napkin over the crusted rim, and eased the cap free with one silent turn. If the wind kicked again, the unguarded spoon would leap straight off the plate. Joy slipped a folded napkin beneath the handle, blocking further wobble before the table could tremor. At the same hour by the kitchen doorway, two squeezed order tickets finally parted, and thin paper edges trembled along the rail. The freed ticket drifted forward on the metal rod, its pale tail fluttering toward the quietly buzzing lamp.
