Again the mechanism gulped the piece and fell silent, as if the entire shelter held its breath around him. Glen unzipped his travel pack, one scarred by seasons of backpacking trips that had rubbed wanderlust into every seam. From an inner sleeve he drew a slim electronic translator, its amber screen still glowing from earlier vocabulary drills. He slid the plastic edge between the lever and the housing, turning the tool gently as a wedge. If the lever stuck again, he would miss the approaching bus waiting at the far end of the platform. Metal groaned, first stubborn, then yielding by a finger’s width; a faint clink answered from inside the compartment. A cardboard cup dropped halfway, halted, and hung unevenly above the dispenser grille, rocking under its own slight weight.

Glen nudged the translator a shade deeper, and the lever eased completely, allowing the machine to complete its unfinished cycle. Instead of cocoa, a tiny bag of humble salted peanuts slid after the crooked cup, scattering ochre shells onto the floor. York closed his book long enough to raise an eyebrow, yet the arriving bus horn covered any comment. Glen gathered the hanging cup, let the peanuts fall into his pocket, and stepped toward the door as passengers lined up. Behind the vending machine’s plastic window, amber crumbs from the torn peanut bag clung to the grille in a narrow crescent.
