English 原文
Three faint rings of dried dye had formed on the towel before Yara had even returned from the sink. The magnifying glass had been left between the red and blue glasses, its rim still cool against the wood. Yara lowered a fresh celery stalk, the cut end entering the yellow water with a soundless dip, while Palmer balanced his pencil over the notebook, eager to draw every stripe. An ant wandered along the warm windowsill and paused where sunlight met glass—its tiny legs testing the slope like feet on a riverbank. Yara’s shoulders rolled forward as she nudged the blue glass closer to the pane; Palmer’s knee tapped the table, and the coloured water trembled, casting moving patches that looked like a loose mural across the towel.
Both hands reached for the lone magnifying glass at once. Their knuckles met, and the lens wobbled. If the lens had rolled off the edge, the blue glass below would have cracked. Palmer pulled back first, giving a doubtful shrug that shifted his weight to the opposite hip. Yara lifted the lens but angled it toward his page, letting him trace ribs already striped crimson. The draft from the half-open window chilled the blue glass; its stalk lagged behind, so Yara waited through ten steady heartbeats before swapping it with the warmer yellow one. The new order sent colour climbing in a fresher sequence, like a fragmenting fresco inside living stone.
When Palmer slid the lens across the towel, Yara bent closer to inspect the now front-row blue stalk. An ant, drawn by a bead dropped during the shuffle, climbed onto the liquid and carried a speck of dye on its abdomen. It plodded over Palmer’s notebook, leaving turquoise dots that turned his careful sketch into a spotted landscape. He angled the page so Yara could mark each interval with her ruler, their shoulders bobbing in silent laughter. They rested the damp sheet at the table’s edge, then stepped away from the glass row. The ant kept marching toward the windowsill while the tap continued its slow rhythm, plop after plop.
