He lifted the compass, but a tiny air bubble slid under the clear dome, swaying the needle. His chest pressed against pack straps while he tilted the housing, chasing the bubble sideways. The path split beyond the water, and the blurred arrow plate seemed to point both left and forward. One more half turn of his wrist sent the needle off course again, and he lowered the compass.

Choosing the dryer stones first, Sage skipped ahead, her step sending ochre droplets over the orange pebbles below. Niall followed, planting each boot carefully until both entered a pine corridor where resin scented the warm air. A tilted wooden post waited just beyond the corridor edge, drawing their attention away from the scented air. Most of its triangle symbol had been obscured by lichen, leaving only a jagged outline that resembled a small dinosaur frozen mid-stride. Sage crouched beside the post and brushed at the growth with the edge of her glove. The flaky crust broke away, revealing a broader shape that looked closer to an iguanodon than the tidy triangle they expected. Unsure what that meant for the fork ahead, they paused beneath the copper-toned trunks. Niall unzipped his pack and carefully handed over a small plastic box from the side pocket. The lid popped, and the scent of quinoa salad mixed with crushed pine needles. They ate in silence, grainy spoonfuls broken by bird calls, then drifted along the smoother right-hand track until ferns closed around them.

A branch brushed Niall’s shoulder, and something thudded into the pine needles at his heel. The compass had slipped from a side pocket during the push through the ferns. He picked it up, remembering the way the bubble slid when held upright too steeply. He set the housing flat against a smooth fallen birch limb lying across the path. The needle steadied, pointing along a faint gap where sunlight struck the ground like honey. If the brook had been deeper, backtracking would have carried soaked boots all afternoon. Now the steadier bearing promised a shorter climb toward the ridge ahead. Sage nudged the hidden marker the compass indicated, and loose fern spores left a pale streak across the bark.
