The narrow left pocket of Lyle’s canvas tool roll showed only chalky specks where his flat-tipped trowel should have waited. He crouched, patted the dust beside his knee, and traced a short groove across the pale grid square in front of him until the metal edge surfaced under a crumble of soil.

With the trowel back in hand, Lyle skimmed away a caramel band of loose chalk, then shifted to the soft brush. Each amber stroke carried fine powder onto the pit rim, where the drift scattered across an ant column. The insects broke formation; their twitching legs formed a dark ribbon that caught the flash of a small sparrow. The bird dived for the moving dots, its wings beating warm air over the chalk and knocking Lyle’s spray bottle from the ledge. The bottle rolled, water misting in a thin arc that darkened the exposed fossil curve and dampened a spare pair of bright vests left from yesterday’s community service tidy-up.

Lyle scrambled after the bottle, but Joy, working the next square, caught it before it could spill again, her grin matching the sassy remarks and playful banter they had traded earlier. The brief shower had already fostered growth of tiny dark flecks on the chalk surface; they looked like lichen blooming along the ridge. He had planned to keep the layer dry, yet the damp now revealed a second, fainter curve beside the first. Using the dental pick, he traced around both shapes while two ducklings waddle along the pit’s shallow edge, disturbed by the earlier wing-beat. By the time Joy placed the rescued bottle into the once-empty pocket, droplets still slipped from its tip and tapped the fabric, sending slow beads sliding toward the roll’s frayed corner.
