Cold wet sand pressed between Ruby’s fingers, the grains gripping like packed sugar as she patted the base of the tallest tower. Grey kneeled beside her, steadying the upside-down plastic bucket whose rim showed a wide crack. The rim had been chipped on the trip from the car, leaving a jagged line that scratched Ruby’s tender knuckles each time she smoothed the sides. She had tamped the sand firmly, yet when she tried to lift the mould, suction and the crooked edge refused to let go. She pulled once, twice, then rocked the bucket; the tower’s surface tore, shedding a sheet of damp grains. Overhead, a gull wheeled, its sharp call cutting the salty air like a tiny battle cry. Nearby, their earlier sculpture of a plump mole rat crouched beside the wall, already leaning as the rising tide darkened the sand around its paws.

Another wave slid farther, leaving a knotty braid of seaweed across the moat and crumbling the tower’s seaward face. Ruby reached with the flat wooden stick, trying to dislodge the tangle, but the sticky fronds clung to everything. Grey glanced at the damaged tower, then at the cracked bucket still in Ruby’s hand. The crack’s sharp edge had carved an accidental groove down the wall; the groove looked surprisingly clean. Without a word, he rolled the rim gently against the torn section. The broken plastic acted like a comb, shaving neat ridges and rebuilding the surface faster than the stick ever could. Ruby pressed damp sand behind the bucket as it turned, and the once-damaged tower grew bold lines that matched the pattern all around. If the bucket were smooth, the repair might drag on until another wave arrived, but the very flaw that delayed them now finished the work. When they stepped back, foam reached the moat and paused. Strands of dark seaweed clung to the repaired ridges, shining under the low sun.
