A Splash Between Brush Strokes-

English 原文
The paper's rough tooth pressed against Sage's knuckles as she angled the tilted board a little lower. A dusty smell rose from the dry wood and tart fallen crabapple skins, weaving a sense of belonging around the low table. Honey sweetness drifted from the palette while a chalky tang escaped the rinse cup nearby. The branch had been sketched lightly before colour touched the paper, its outline still grey and crumbly. Sage aimed to flood the lowest petals with pink before the drying boundary slid farther down the sheet. She touched the palette, yet the well that had held rose pigment had turned to a brittle ring. A quick drop from the cloudy rinse water revived the crust, but the colour ran pale like watered milk. While she mixed, a sour vinegary note rose from the cup, and seconds leaked away until a faint skin formed.
Across the table, Dorian rinsed a wide brush inside a plastic bucket brought for garden water. Every swirl raised a hollow slosh, and cool mineral smells drifted over like wet stone after rain. One heavier splash arced clear of the rim, landed on Sage’s picture, and burst across a cluster of half-dry blossoms. The drop rewetted that stubborn patch, yet it also pushed pigment outward in a ragged bloom ring. Sage’s shoulders stiffened, and tiny bumps travelled along her forearm as the unexpected mark crept wider. If the brush split again, the line would look wrong, so she chose a softer round from the jar instead.
Dorian set his clean water beside her without a word; both boards now shared the small table edge. She dipped into the fresh bucket, lifted richer pigment, and coaxed colour back over the moist ring before it fixed. Honey and cold stone smells mingled while the drying line dragged another centimetre downward, yet the blossoms now echoed the branch. At the same hour, a page turned on the garden chair behind them, releasing dry paper dust into warm air.

Dorian
