English 原文
The braided pull-cord scraped across Dale’s palm, leaving faint warmth as coarse fibres slid free. He clenched the handle, drew hard, and the salmon-pink top shot into the arena’s warm half. A hum rose, then faltered when the cord rebounded loosely, slipping from the notched spindle. The disc drifted along overlapping scratches and toppled before reaching the centre ring. By the time it lay still, tiny fibres dangled like broken threads from the cord’s thinner section. Dale’s shoulders dipped as he wound the cord again, but the slack remained, refusing to grip tightly.
He crossed the room to the parts bench, where cooler plastic met his forearms and steadied his pace. A small loaf wrapped in paper lay beside the felt tray; the crust was rough against his fingertips. He chewed slowly, then nudged the four weight clips into a loose wreath so their shapes could be compared. One clip had gathered a smear of dark grit, probably creekside mud carried on someone’s shoe during morning practice. Using the stubby screwdriver, he scraped the grit away, metal edges biting gently into his thumb skin. Beside him, Amos adjusted a different disc, its tip clicking against the tray before he walked back to the arena. Dale wiped crumbs from the bench, rolled his shoulders, and examined fresh scratches that spiralled through the cool shadow side. He turned toward the stool, unaware that Amos’s next launch would chart a sharper line.
Amos’s newly launched top slammed the loose clip; metal pinged, and the clip skittered across the rim toward the bench. It struck the frayed cord, knocking it to Dale’s feet before spinning out toward the recovery zone. Without thinking, he caught the cord, twisted the section twice, and pressed the fold with the screwdriver. The repair stiffened the braid; his next pull sent the disc to the centre, humming steady. A groove had been carved near the rim, yet the fibres slid smoothly over the notch. Hours later, the arena stood empty; sunlight had withdrawn, and faint evening chill cooled the once-warm plastic. In the half-dark, that new groove glimmered under window light like a thin silver crescent.
