English 原文
'Why is the red glass lower?' Moritz let the question ride on a sharp drip that struck the kitchen towel with a hollow pat. Three glasses stood in a row, each humming faintly as the tap kept its slow cadence: plip…plip…plip. A ruler had been placed beside them earlier, and a pencil stripe at thirty millimetres marked the goal. Moritz lifted the jug. Water rushed, then broke into softer glugs that rang inside the red glass. The surface climbed only ten millimetres before slipping quiet again. A loose leaf on the celery stalk shivered against the rim, but the stalk’s pale base still peeked above the coloured water.
Zander, acting like a colour zealot, rattled the magnifying glass close to the ruler. 'Another pour,' he whispered, the words nearly drowned by the timer gadget that buzzed against the notebook cover. Moritz tipped the jug once more. A thicker gush thudded in, raising the level to twenty-four millimetres. The allure of reaching the stripe tightened their focus; yet six millimetres remained. If the level dipped again, they would need fresh dye. Moritz paused while the parent at the sink sliced a spare stalk, the knife scraping in short bursts. When the jug felt lighter, Zander slid his finger over the lip for control. Together they eased the last stream. No clink marked success; instead, a hush fell as the water line touched the pencil stripe and covered the celery’s cut end in one smooth rise.
Exactly then, the timer’s buzz shifted to a high pitch, vibrating off the glass row. A tiny wave leapt from the blue glass, landed with a soft slap, and left a darker impression on the towel. The ruler stayed where it was, the tide mark now hidden beneath steady coloured water.
