English 原文
A deep rush echoed inside the stone chamber as water surged through the first paddle under the gate. Opal gripped the iron windlass, the implement cold against her palm, and counted ladder rungs down the slimy wall. Its rounded socket had been polished smooth by countless hands before hers. The plan was clear: fill the lock until the waterline touched the bright algae band three rungs above. Farther along the towpath, the lock-keeper stood by a bollard, coat flapping, silent as a referee. After two minutes the surface had climbed only to the first rung, leaving the boat low and the gate unmoved. A mallard drifting beside the hull gave a quick shake, scattering droplets that tapped the timber like tiny drums. Silas, standing by the upstream pool, tossed pieces of crisp rhubarb stalk onto the dark surface and watched them spiral.
Opal opened the second paddle, expecting the flow to double, yet the rush arrived uneven, swirling harder on Silas’s side. She leaned over the balance beam and studied the tilt; rhubarb chips gathered against one wall in a slow curve. To shift the balance, she rocked the heavy timber, rhythm steady as a metronome, sending small waves toward the quieter corner. Still, the algae mark hovered above the water, so her arms began to stiffen and her trail of waves faltered. A sudden weight landed on her knuckles—a dragonfly with wings bright as cut sapphire—and the shock froze her motion mid-swing. During that still pause, water from both paddles evened, met the algae band at once, and the gate drifted a finger’s width. Opal exhaled, leaned with a longer push, and the huge timber swung free of its watery grip.
Water now matched the towpath, and the narrowboat eased under the bridge while Silas jogged ahead with the mooring line. Opal wiped spray from her forehead, then turned the windlass closed, the gear teeth humming quieter than before. Her shoulders had tightened when the task began, yet those steady pushes had finally tipped the scale. As she stepped back, the dragonfly lifted away, circled the damp air, and vanished toward a patch of willow. The mallard bobbed beside the gate, its green head tilting toward the sudden wedge of daylight beyond. With a quick splash, the bird pushed downstream, leaving widening amber ripples that lapped against the algae band.
