English 原文
Forrest pressed both palms against the iron pump handle; wet rust bit his skin while his boots searched for balance in the mud. The bucket beneath the spout still showed a palm-wide gap below the painted mark, and boards in the goat pen shook each time the animals shifted weight. He pushed down; torque in the joint strained his shoulders, and a thin ribbon of water arched into the bucket. Only the bottom shone. A second thrust followed. Vibration travelled through the trough; a tin scoop that had been balanced on the rim tilted outward. The crisp air carried no sound but the faint scrape of metal. Puddles near his heel had begun to solidify on top, cracking when his footing rolled forward. One full bucket would reach the manger’s line; anything less and the goats would nose the tub over.
He gave a third heave. The scoop slid completely, tapped the wheelbarrow’s front leg, and fell with a dull ring. The jolt rocked the barrow; its flat tyre sank deeper, and the top layer of loose hay slipped off the mound. The pieces, cut from an abundance of summer grass, formed a small cliff of green strands against the fence post before stopping. Water finally surged; the surface in the bucket rose, brushed the red mark, and overflowed in a brief sheet that soaked his glove. The discrete weight told his arms the threshold was crossed. Forrest straightened, spine stretching, and hauled the heavy bucket toward the gate, muscles tight but steady. He scooped the fallen hay with his free hand and swung it into the manger.
Goats leaned together and tugged at the fresh pile, horns thudding softly against wood while the cart’s wheel eased upright again. Forrest latched the gate and stepped toward the shed, the emptied bucket knocking against his leg. The farm dog dropped its chest, sprang through the scattered straw, and its tail drew fast circles as its paws pattered through soft mud toward the water pump.
