English 原文
"A bucket fits here," Harris said.
Sara swung the half-full metal pail across the scorched ground, the handle clanking against its rim. She had stacked most of the clay blocks hours earlier, yet the dome now ticked and hissed as heat chased out moisture. A sharp pop sounded; steam shot from a new crack high on the mound, like air slipping through a narrow whistle. Sara tipped the bucket and pressed cool soil over the shining opening. The hiss dulled but did not stop; thin vapour still whispered between loose grains, proving the first displacement of earth was not enough.
She hurried to the earth supply pile, boots scraping inside the fire-raking zone, and filled a second bucket to the brim. The metal sides vibrated with every step back; halfway, she caught a root and had to stumble forward three short hops to keep the load upright. At the mound she packed the fresh soil, tamping with flat palms while pops echoed under the dome. The leak shrank, yet a higher hairline split appeared; heated air lifted powdery dust through it, carrying a sweeter smell that made Sara wonder how far the onions above had cooked. A third plan formed: block the vent with a folded banana leaf before more cracks formed. If the gap widened, steam would sweep sideways and cool the corn.
She fetched one last scoop, this time mixing damp clay with bits of straw so the plug would cling. The banana leaf sizzled the instant it touched the hot surface; Sara pressed the sticky soil against it, and a muted thud signalled the leaf locking into place. For two breaths nothing happened. Then the long hiss faded all at once, replaced by scattered ticks like tiny bells inside porcelain. The combined weight from the three buckets had been distributed evenly, and no fresh steam escaped. Harris drifted to the observation bench, beginning quiet storytelling about riverbank kilns while their shared timer tracked what their calendar called quality time. Behind them, a narrow plume spiralled through a distant hairline crack, drifting diagonally across the grey sky.
