Charcoal lines swept across Thea’s page as Hana stepped onto the springy grass with the kite reel. The grass had been trimmed short by grazing sheep, and glare bounced off each blade like sparks on tin. A low wooden deck, part of the park’s picnic infrastructure, stood behind them; Hana picked the corridor for steadier wind. She had checked the midline knot earlier, then let the fabric climb until the string hummed like a violin string. On her third backward step, the line brushed a thistle; its hooked leaves trapped the fibres and jerked the kite sideways. Hana ran two strides, but the tangle only tightened, forcing her to stop with the kite tilting dangerously low.

While Thea cradled the spare frame away from the flapping cloth, Hana crouched to free the snagged string. A gust dragged the line; the kite skimmed the grass, stirring blades and startling a rabbit from its patch of pooled darkness. The rabbit dashed downslope, bumping a sheep’s flank; three sheep bolted in short leaps, their shadows sweeping across Hana’s feet. The tightened snag bent the thistle toward the ground, yet the rigid stem held the line like a barb. If the reel were clean, it could spin freely, but viscous mud from the hollow glued two turns together. Hana tugged once more and noticed how the stubborn stalk anchored the kite during each lull, stopping a full crash. She pushed the stem deeper and looped the last stretch of string around its tough crown instead.

The thistle’s barbs gripped the fibres; with the reel fixed, the kite rose again on the next burst of light. She scraped the mud away, yet no spare line waited; every centimetre lay taut between reel, thistle, and bright speck overhead. Wind eased, and the plant’s cradle kept tension while the sheep drifted back to grazing, closing the chain her dive had begun. The final loop of line circled the stem; no slack remained between her palm and the knot. High above, the kite’s silhouette drifted in tight arcs, the taut string vibrating across the glare at the hill’s edge.

薊草的倒鉤緊扣纖維；捲線器固定後，下一股亮光般的風讓風箏再度升高。她刮掉泥巴，卻沒有多餘的線；每一公分都繃直，連著捲線器、薊草和頭頂那點亮斑。風勢放緩，植物的搖籃般支撐依舊維持張力，羊群恢復吃草，終結了由一次俯衝引起的連鎖。最後一圈線繞住莖部，她手心到結扣之間已無鬆度。高空中，風箏的剪影畫出緊湊圓弧，拉直的線在山邊耀眼光芒上顫動不止。
