Only a thumb-thick ribbon of chocolate sauce remained inside the squeeze bottle on the topping shelf, its caramel gleam showing through the warm pendant light. Wren balanced a waffle cone that already held two domes of ice cream—the lower scoop strawberry, the upper one a pale coriander-lime chosen for its bright colour. The generous mounds, still firm from the display case, pressed against each other like slowly melting bricks. Wren aimed the bottle, yet the first squeeze sent a runny stream beyond the target; sauce splashed the wooden counter, leaving a tactile, glossy smear that crept toward a shaker full of rainbow sprinkles.

A bell chimed as the door swung wide, turning the narrow aisle into a brief thoroughfare of moving feet and warm air. Napkins fluttered from the stack beside Oona, and the younger sibling had to speak up over the hiss of the waffle press, "They’re flying away!" Wren lunged to catch the drifting squares before they reached the damp floor. While both children gathered the last sheet, the server tapped the iron closed again, releasing a fresh puff of toasted sweetness. The pause lasted only moments, yet the air between freezer and topping shelf kept working on the abandoned cone.

When Wren hurried back, the upper scoop showed a glossy tilt; chocolate sauce had pooled along the cone’s rim and run down to the earlier splash. That thin puddle now served as a slippery path. The sprinkle shaker’s metal base glided on the smear, nudged the glass jar of cookie crumbles, and set the jar rocking in a slow, widening arc. A low rail fixed to the shelf caught the jar before it could fall, halting the miniature slide. The motion, however, passed back to the lighter shaker, which continued to edge forward, its coloured grains rattling inside. Wren slid one palm under the trembling shaker, catching stray sugar beads while it kept drifting toward the rail.
