The Rope That Slipped Loose-

English 原文
A flat clang echoed along the quay when an iron cleat struck the granite edge, leaving a metallic taste in the damp air. Beside it lay a palm-thick mooring rope; salt crystals whitened its dark fibres, and a sharp herbal scent seeped from a torn, jelly-filled leaf wedged under one strand. Nina watched the leaf’s gel shine like wet glass and, thinking it was seaweed, brushed it; the bitter smell prickled her nose. When she tugged the rope, the strand twitched but stopped—the far end disappeared beneath a blue crate perched across the ice box, where cold brine dripped through gaps and carried a fish-fat flavour. She pressed the aloe fragment against the rough hemp, hoping it would slide, yet the rope stayed pinned while diesel fumes drifted from the fuel pump corner and mixed with a sulphur hint rising from an old geothermal pipe under the boards.
The water line on the quay wall now sat two marks lower, and Zeke’s boots scraped nearby while he counted empty tubs. The rope needed slack before the tide dropped further, yet the crate had been stacked for weighing, and its destination number was still smudged. Nina crouched, letting icy runoff cool her fingertips, and tried a new idea: she eased the rope toward the narrow gap between crate slats, then used the slick aloe gel to nurture a sliding path along the salt-stiff fibres. With each quiet pull, a pungent mix of anchovy skin and chipped pine filled her mouth, but the rope inched free without disturbing the heavy load. A final heave released it; the end sprang clear and she looped it high around a bollard shaped like the roof peak of the harbourmaster hut that resembled a tiny seaside chalet. Far down the dock, at the net-drying racks, gulls wheeled through smoky air from a cook’s kettle, squabbling over scales that sparkled on the ground. Nina tightened the fresh loop around the iron bollard.
