English 原文
"That post leans again," Wade muttered. He shifted his backpack and walked closer. Afternoon warmth pressed across his shoulders as he and Bea followed the narrow track through the fern hollow toward their next checkpoint. A tilted marker stood knee-high in packed earth; the arrow plate hung crooked, its edges green with lichen. Wade crouched, knees bending against the soft ground, and observed two old bolt holes that showed where the plate had once faced. He drew out his compass, yet the needle wobbled each time his boots slid on the sloped path. Wade had checked the compass twice already, yet he doubted the reading when a tiny bubble slid under the clear cover, nudging the needle left. He tried to align the arrow with the trembling needle, then pointed toward a dim opening between the ferns. If the bubble drifted again, they would risk another wrong turn, yet he began along the uncertain track.
The path soon narrowed and the fern tips brushed Bea’s elbows, hiding another post deeper inside the hollow. This marker was nearly buried; only the triangle symbol peeked through moss so thick it swallowed the paint. Bea eased her hand under the plate to steady it while Wade unscrewed his water bottle. A teaspoon of water might rejuvenate the faded surface enough to reveal the shape. The first splash slid off, taking loose grains with it, but the colour beneath still blurred. Their mentor Joel, hiking on a parallel path, called a brief greeting from somewhere upslope, then continued without slowing. Bea kept the plate upright so Wade could scrub with his thumb. The stream grew thinner with every shake of the bottle. A final bead of water rolled over the scraped metal, cutting a clean edge around the pointing triangle. The bottle gave a soft hiss and lay flat, its sides caved inward.
