English 原文
The sunlit brass spigot felt chilly against Paloma’s knuckles, colder than the damp gravel beneath her knees. Beside her, Esme balanced a watering can, its smooth rim pressing a faint groove into her palm. Both plots waited behind them, seedlings beginning to droop. The shared hose coiled stubbornly around the wall-mounted reel. Paloma turned the handle. A characteristic metallic squeak scraped through the herb beds and made Esme glance up. Water hissed for a heartbeat then stopped, as if the pipe inside had swallowed air instead of liquid. A breeze skimmed her sleeve, but the hose remained slack and heavy.
Paloma traced the green line until her fingers found a kink squeezed flat behind the reel’s bracket. The hose had been wound too tightly, and a small plastic lock pinned two loops together. Part of the tube had been pinched by a splintered timber edge, its surface ridged like dry bark. Esme knelt and lifted the freed length; grit rasped across her skin while water still refused to move. Nearby, two sparrows gambol through loose compost, kicking crumbs of leaf into the air. Paloma snapped the lock open, straightened the hose, yet the dial remained at zero. Esme tapped the timer and raised three fingers, showing the minutes they could split. Paloma nodded; if they waited too long, another gardener might appear and take the slot.
Esme rolled the dial to three, and pressure built in silent waves. A pulse surged along the rubber, bulging the line between Paloma’s thumbs. The first burst crashed into the watering can; its hollow belly threw back a soft echo that rippled under the bean frames. The second surge leapt the rim, soaked their shoes, and vanished into thirsty soil that darkened like spilled ink. Paloma lifted the nozzle toward her bed while Esme stepped aside with her filled can, their movements fitting together without words. When the dial returned to zero, both plots glistened and the hose lay slack again. The spigot that had felt chilly before now warmed Paloma’s fingertips, and a late bee bumped the metal before drifting toward the bean flowers.
