Dust Holding Its Breath-

English 原文
Morning birdsong had thinned since the first turn, and Fern now crouched beside the five-stone cairn. Joel, tightening his boot laces on a flat rock, hummed a loose tune that drifted up the slope. Fern aimed to add one more stone, a small goal that felt possible before lunch called them downhill. She lifted a grey disc from the trail margin; its cool underside left moisture on her fingertips. When she aligned it over the top stone, a sharp gust rattled through the sage and shook the stack. Pebbles skipped, and the disc slid sideways with a scraping cry, knocking two layers back onto the gravel. Dust rose in a thin plume, hanging long enough for Fern to witness the tiny collapse twice in echoing clacks. Her first method—steady placement during brief lulls—clearly lacked a sustainable answer to the hillside wind.
She recalled the rust-red marker stone near the scrub hedge gap just as clouds dimmed every colour around her. With hues hidden, she rapped each flat candidate on the sorting boulder, trusting pitch instead of sight. A flat oval stone had been hidden beneath the scrub earlier, and she slid it free with a low scrape. One piece gave a hollow ping, so she flipped it and heard a steady thud, the surface finally true. She crouched lower than before and let the stone glide the final centimetre, aligning edges by touch alone. Wind followed, yet the tower answered only with a brief sand-rustle and kept its shape. Fern stepped downhill two paces, listening; the six stones remained balanced, a quiet geometry against the slope.
A pebble tumbled from the stack’s shadow, clicked twice on the hard path, and slipped into silence. Fern let her arms hang, ears tuned for a hint of wobble that never arrived. Above the cairn, insects traced looping arcs, their wings buzzing together like thin wire strings. At the same hour beyond the next ridge, a shepherd’s bell rang twice, its metal tremor carrying across empty gullies.
