English 原文
A broom handle, a tin oil can, and a crate of leafy vegetables pressed against the curved stone wall. The crate had been shoved there by the floor’s faint vibration, and now it blocked the narrow alcove where the spare wooden wedges lived. Jarvis’s goal was simple: tighten the leather drive belt before its loose loop grew dangerous. Each rotation made the strip smack the post; flour drifted like warm silk, and the sharp, pungent smell of heated grain nipped at his throat. He dug his shoulder against the crate, but the heavy box slid only a finger-width across the gritty boards before grinding to a stop, its rough base catching on scattered kernels.
Overhead, a sudden gust made the shaft spin faster, and the belt’s dangling end began to prance in uneven hops, slapping louder and cracking Jarvis’s rhythm sense. Vivian, sweeping near the packing table, glanced over but kept her broom moving. Another try at pushing failed; the flour-dusted floor had grown too slippery. Grain now spilled beside the collecting bin, piling softly like powdered snow. Jarvis crouched to catch the flow, and his palm landed on a firm, cool butternut squash that had rolled from the shifted crate. Its thick neck tapered to a blunt wedge. The same weight that had made the crate immovable pressed against his skin with surprising solidity. An idea sparked without words. He grabbed the squash, slid behind the flapping belt, and eased the vegetable’s sturdy neck between leather and post. The belt’s tension squeezed the butternut deeper until the slap stopped; quiet returned except for the steady hum of gears.
With the noise tamed, Jarvis reached into the newly calm alcove, took the oil can, and coated the belt’s dry edge. Flour resumed its gentle fall into the bin, no longer scattering. When the wind eased again, he left the butternut in place, a pale wedge speckled with dust. Heat still tingled across his forearms, and the ridged imprint of the belt line lingered against his wrists long after he stepped back.
