Wings slapped air, flicking a fan of cool drops onto Briar’s half-finished page. Water darkened the paper fibers but also lifted a faint graphite blur. She steadied her stance, then used the moist sleeve of her hoodie to amend the line work, shaping the stain into the shaded arms of the coin. For a moment, she moved like a restorer patching a mural. She began adding oceanic curls around the drawing, yet the pump motor hummed back to full pressure, raising a curtain of spray that blocked the view and pushed her a step backward. Behind her, sheets of water kept drifting from basin to basin.
