English 原文
Two sneaker soles balanced on the rolling step-stool, their silhouette edging across bright biography spines as Drake turned into the aisle. Uma steadied herself, chasing a photography album gleaming on the top tier where an unwavering shaft of light struck the dust. Drake halted, belt buckle glinting under the ceiling glare, because his atlas for geography class waited one shelf higher. The step-stool, low yet sturdy, was being occupied, and the carpet muffled every impatient shift of Drake’s shoes. Above their heads, a wall clock reflected fluorescent glare in a pale disc that declared fifteen minutes remained. Between them rolled a cart brimming with fresh returns, its polished handles catching stray window glow like small mirrors. Both reached for the same steel rail, then paused, light sliding over overlapping fingers.
Drake had searched the catalog earlier, so the call-number for the atlas floated clear in his memory. He leaned closer, pointing toward the stubborn volume wedged just beyond Uma’s reach, its spine drowned in the shadow-edge. Uma met his glance, climbed down smoothly, and rolled the stool half a stride aside, leaving the glare squarely on his target. If the wheels left the narrow plastic runner, the stool would buckle, so Drake hoisted each rim over the join. He climbed, balanced by Uma’s steady palm on the frame, and drew the heavy atlas into the glare. They exchanged places without a word; Drake steadied the stool, and a ribbon of light stretched upward along the bindings Uma explored. A sudden hum dimmed the fluorescents; staff had begun closing rows, leaving their aisle in a narrower pool of brightness. Uma’s album slid free, and both stepped aside just as the cart brimming with returns rolled back toward storage. From the mezzanine rail above, their twin silhouettes and the squat stool occupied a sliver of light no wider than a bookmark.
