Steps had scuffed half the guideline, turning it into a blur. Emil lifted one end of the frame and compared it with the design taped down the wall, yet indoor bulbs hid hue shifts. Thinking fast, he peeled three sheets from the roll and carried them to the doorway light zone. Daylight revealed that his blue carried a green hint; Glen’s side looked true. Emil had already stapled two rows, so fixing the shade demanded fresh alignment before the paste began to congeal on the paper.

He had just returned when Glen’s elbow brushed a bucket lid and knocked it loose. The thinner paste, mixed earlier to nurture the fresh petals, sloshed over the rim, slid down the low trailer, and poured onto the dusty floor like warm batter. The stream followed a slight slope, rolled across the chalk line, and washed the border away. If the paste spread farther, the chalk seam would disappear for good. A few dried peppercorn pieces, waiting in a dish for scent, floated with the paste and rattled beneath a tool cart. Its lowest drawer stood ajar; paste seeped inside and glued spare bulbs to the base. Emil yanked a string-light bundle, pressed the coil against the flow, and the wires bent into a dam that slowed the ribbon. Glen steadied the bucket above. Sticky paste cooled across Emil’s forearms; a slow drip slid from his elbow toward the floor.
