Thin steam had been curling from the workshop’s lantern for nearly an hour when Harris leaned over the size tray. The fleece lining of his smock brushed his forearms as he spread his weight along the wooden rim. Rows of paint cups had been arranged by the instructor earlier, each surface already skinned with a faint film. A jeweler’s loupe, borrowed for fun, pressed a pale ring into the skin around his right eye. He drew up a loaded stick; the tendons in his wrist tightened, and a single blue drop fell. The instant it touched, the warmer corner let the colour glide outward in a broad, almost perfect disc. That sudden expansion sheared the earlier meniscus, pushing a thin wave toward the colder side and shrinking yesterday’s pale rings. The growing pattern already resembled a murmuration, countless ovals folding and overlapping in close formation.

Each new drop landed with a soft plop, yet the warm patch kept eating space and squeezed bands toward the far edge. Harris slid the wide-tooth comb across the tray, the tool’s teeth meeting light resistance before paint drifted sideways under unseen currents. He spotted ripples fanning from the lantern’s side—evidence that rising heat loosened surface tension beneath that corner. Bracing both forearms, he lifted the tray two hand-spans away, feeling calf muscles quiver under the unexpected weight. The convection faded; pigment movement slowed into broad arcs that drifted gently instead of twisting. He rolled the prepared paper across the surface in one smooth hinge, elbows locking to keep the sheet flat. A slow ache spread through his shoulders, and a faint tingling travelled down his fingertips while loops of colour kept sliding inward.
