English 原文
Dry paper rubbed the pad of Flora's thumb while she nudged the metal clip tighter against the sheet. A soft crinkle joined the low hum of the rotating diorama nearby, and the easel arm answered with a hollow knock. She wanted a rich shadow under the sculpture’s chin, so her pencil scratched a quick line, sharp as split ice. The easel angle relied on a small pulley hidden behind the board, its cord resting inside a narrow notch beside the hinge. When Flora leaned in, her elbow brushed the cord, and the cord slipped, releasing a faint click that rattled through the corner. She eased the board back, believing it settled, and the sketch continued while distant footstep echoes mixed with the motor’s drone.
A triple chime pulsed from the ceiling speakers; at once, a tour group swelled into the corridor like slow water around stones. Rope barriers clicked apart, and visitors streamed past the sketch corner, their headphones rustling against collars. During the slow procession, a fragrant hint of floor polish drifted up as shoes dragged, masking the dry scent of graphite. Cyrus murmured, "We can wait here." The group’s final echo faded, and Flora returned, yet the notch had shifted and the board leaned forward by two finger-widths. Her next touch freed the frame; the pencil box slid along the shelf, struck the easel leg, and dislodged the souvenir stamp. The loosened stamp arm thudded onto the ink pad with a damp, echoing clop. That impact knocked the collector booklet sideways, and its front page fluttered upward like a slow banner. Cyrus slid a brochure under the rolling box, the paper's crisp edge jamming it still and stopping the tiny chain.
Flora studied the forward tilt; the sheet now caught stronger overhead glare, outlining the sculpture’s cheek with a sharper edge. Rather than fight the new slant, she pinned the lower margin, letting gravity darken each graphite stroke into a deeper tone. Beside her, the booklet’s raised page waved gently, and each tiny flap fanned cool air across her wrist. She listened to the alternating hush and rustle, matching the rhythm with quick taps that filled hollow outlines. The page had been speckled with ink during the tumble, and those dots now hinted at scattered gravel beneath the statue’s feet. Fresh graphite smears streaked over the bright metal clip and across the easel lip today. Behind them, the freed booklet page drifted back and forth above the inked stamp groove.
