Xara pressed her thumb along the silver strip, trying to hold it against the chair seat while balloons jostled nearby. An adult at the pump table clipped fresh string lengths, the scissors throwing quick chrome flashes under the fluorescent glare. On the window sill, a blue-grey cat crouched, its nose twitching each time the pump hissed and the nylon spool clicked. Xara’s goal was clear: tie five balloons into a tidy cluster and walk them to the ceiling corner before they drifted again. A pale draft from the kitchen doorway already nudged one green globe across the shiny table surface.

She scooped the runaway balloon back, added it to the others, and twisted their necks together with a quick quarter turn. Yet the combined knot sagged; the cluster leaned left, refusing to rest upright on the chair despite her careful adjustments. A fraction of moist air clung to the latex near the doorway, giving those balloons extra weight no eyes could register. To counteract the imbalance, Xara slipped another loop of ribbon around the right side and pulled tight, but the knot slipped again. The cat chose that moment to intervene, swatting the lowest balloon and sending the whole bundle wobbling like a slow pendulum. Static made the fur on its tail lift, adding an odd, silver fringe to the scene.

She paused, knees bent, and tried to keep in mind where the warm airflow met the cooler part of the room. Tilting the bundle away from the doorway, she lifted it higher, letting the lighter dry balloons downward so the damp ones rose. That small change balanced the shape, and the knot finally sat level in her palm. She stepped onto the stool, pressed tape against the textured ceiling, and hooked the ribbon before another draft arrived. A suspicion of moisture shimmered on the tape edge, yet the adjusted angle held the cluster steady. Faint crescent prints dented the blue-grey ribbon where her thumbnail had steadied it, and a soft scuff brightened the stool’s silver top.

她把那顆逃跑的氣球撈回來，加到其他氣球裡，再迅速把球口扭成一股。然而綁好的結下垂，整束氣球向左傾，不肯在椅子上直立。門口附近的一點點濕氣附著在乳膠表面，讓那些氣球多出肉眼察覺不到的重量。為了抵消失衡，莎拉又在右側加了一圈緞帶並拉緊，但結又滑開。就在這時，貓伸爪拍向最低的氣球，整束氣球像慢擺的鐘錘一樣晃動；靜電讓牠的尾巴毛豎起，為畫面添了奇怪的銀邊。

她停下來屈膝思考，記住暖氣流與較冷空氣交會的位置。她將整束氣球傾離門口，抬高些，讓較輕且乾燥的氣球朝下，較濕的朝上。這個小改變讓形狀平衡，結終於平穩地躺在她掌心。她踩上小凳，把膠帶壓在有紋理的天花板上，並在下一股氣流到來前勾好緞帶。膠帶邊緣閃著微量濕氣，但調整過的角度仍把整束氣球穩住。她拇指留下的淺月形壓痕印在青灰緞帶上，凳面銀色頂端也多了一道柔亮的刮痕。
