Dust Over the Wet Heel-

English 原文
"The toe still looks dull," Luke said.
Luke raised his sneaker over the brass footrest, its caramel sheen catching the bulb’s glow while Tara watched. Rows of nails gripped the leather like unwavering faith holding a fragile framework, yet a cloudy scuff spread across the toe box. Beside it, a stripe of dye curved around the heel; a rust-colored bead still shimmered, ready to smear if brushed too soon. The warm scent of polish slowly began to percolate across the small doorway area this afternoon. It threaded between chairs and drifted toward the cubbyhole wall where labyrinthine rows of numbered slots held finished pairs. Tara tapped a serpentine coil of waxed thread that dangled from the tool strip, then placed a cloth in Luke’s free palm.
Luke waited until the wheel’s hum dipped, then pressed the toe against its swirling cloth. The cloth flared amber under the bulb, polishing the leather in tight circles until the dull patch vanished. He had already lifted the shoe away when a sprinkle of powder floated back, landing like dusty snow on the still-glossy heel. The grain clung because the dye remained tacky, and its new surface dulled where the powder stuck. Tara drew nearer, eyebrows lifting as the once-clear stripe lost its honey brightness for several centimeters along the rim. The polishing had removed the scuff on the toe, yet the heel now looked speckled, presenting two imperfect choices.
Luke placed the sneaker on the narrow counter and checked the wall clock; if he waited one minute, the dye would stiffen. He blew gently across the heel, allowing warm air to percolate under the powder until tiny grains began to slide away. When the minute passed, he brushed with the cloth in smooth, deliberate sweeps timed to the wheel’s slower rhythm. Most of the dust lifted, though a faint crescent stayed, matching the serpentine edge of the stripe and echoing its curve. The toe shone, the heel kept its line, and Luke slid the pair back into the box by Tara’s feet. A thin amber smear remained on the cloth where the drifting powder had met the still-tacky dye.
