English 原文
"Clamp stays open," Irving said.
Emmet slid a narrow panel into the vice, and a sparrow darted through the bright doorway, its wings scattering a pale glow of dust across the drying shelf. The instructor at the next table kept shaping a model boat, yet the small bird stayed, hopping along a clamp handle under the ceiling glare. Dust began to mingle with the chalk guide on Emmet’s panel until the mark vanished beneath a dim veil. A wire basket of thin offcuts rested near his foot; beside it, a metal container of nails rocked, nudged by the faint vibration that followed each flutter of sparrow wings. A shelf behind him held spinning tops carved for pure amusement during breaks, their lacquer catching random shafts of light. Emmet brushed the surface once—only a hazy line returned—then glanced at the generous patch of glue that had been spread along one edge; the cut needed accuracy before that glue set firm.
If the chalk line stayed hidden, the joint would harden crooked. Emmet reached into the basket, chose a slim pine strip, and wedged it under the panel. The board rose three millimetres, yet the surface remained dull. A second, thicker strip lifted the edge five more millimetres; a faint silhouette of the line appeared but broke in the shadow cast by his hand. He had collected two pieces, still not enough. A final cedar shim, seven millimetres high, joined the stack, and in that moment a single shaft of light slid over the vice jaws; the whole chalk path snapped into clear view. The sparrow flicked upward toward the rafters, loose fibers clinging to its beak as it departed, perhaps for a nest outside. Emmet drew the saw steadily across the bright line. A shallow ribbon of fresh wood glowed under the clamp.
