English 原文
Bright hisses already rose from the pump table; Remy’s quick hands pressed the plunger, and each down-stroke sent a wheeze across the room while half-filled balloons tumbled around his shoes. Liora stepped over a ribbon spool that clicked as it turned and reached the open bag. She had planned to match every streamer loop with its own colour, so the first task looked simple: take a balloon, stretch the curved neck once, fit it to the nozzle, then listen for the soft squeak that confirmed a tight seal. Warm air slipped through the kitchen doorway and rustled the crepe paper, yet the carpet under Liora’s toes felt like a soft hectare of moss, ready to absorb any bounced escapee.
Several minutes of steady pumping filled the floor gathering zone with rubbery thumps, but other rhythms changed. The stove timer rang in the kitchen, and Flora’s voice drifted through steam: “Ready for another ribbon?” Her frosting knife tapped the bowl, sharper than before; the party start crept closer. Liora delved into the bag again and found only five balloons left, their latex already moist from the humid draft. A loose cluster rolled, brushed a streamer, and two balloons popped in quick succession—crack, crack—leaving limp shreds that fluttered down. With the resource shrinking, she trimmed her plan. Instead of covering the whole wall, she chose one corner near the step-stool, deciding that three balloons would be enough. The genuine cotton string beside the chair tangled once around her wrist, but a slow pull freed it, and the spool clicked twice more as she measured a shorter length.
She climbed the low stool, knees steady while the wood creaked, and tied the compact trio to a hook hidden in the textured ceiling. The small group swayed; reflected dots of ceiling light bobbed on their surfaces. Behind her, the empty bag rustled when the last puff of warm air passed through the doorway, then lay still.
