Fallen Mitten by the Thawing Pond-

English 原文
Barrett's red mitten lay soaked and flattened against the warm granite ledge, although he had zipped it safely away earlier that morning. Midday sunlight slicked the stone, and a thin steam curled upward where the fabric touched the heat. He crouched, two fingers pinching the sodden wool, certain the pond's edge still stopped a handspan beyond this rock. Glynis stepped beside him, boots sliding slightly in the mud, her breath clouding despite the soft warmth on their backs. “Found something out of place?” she asked, tilting her head toward the mitten.
Seldom had the ice surrendered so unevenly; a jagged crescent of open water gaped between white shards and shore. Barrett planted his other boot with resolute firmness, tapping the ledge with the mitten to mark where last week's frost line had hovered. The mark bobbed downward as a dribble of meltwater slid over the stone, erasing the stripe within moments. Glynis tossed a pebble, and the tiny splash flung splinters of ice outward; the centrifugal swirl drew them into a slow circle, whispering as winter's grip loosened. Barrett paused, mitten dripping, because the water's cohesion kept the broken crystals linked, refusing to scatter the way he remembered.
They inched along the bank, choosing footholds between patches of moss that wept clear droplets through the thawed soil. A birch twig brushed the surface, rising and falling in a gentle oscillation that timed itself to a breeze too light to feel. Were the sun lower, the ring widening from each dip would glimmer silver; under this bright glare it shone amber, thick as syrup. Barrett lifted the twig, then hesitated, discovering minute leaf buds he had never noticed, each already swelling with stored sweetness. “I thought this branch was dead,” he murmured, setting it back with exaggerated care.
His earlier measurements suddenly felt theatrical; the thaw advanced at its own tempo, indifferent to stripes of damp mitten fiber. Glynis folded the mitten once, placed it on a sunlit patch of stone, and straightened without another word. Both watched water nibble at the ice, each pulse erasing yesterday's footprint, tomorrow's guesswork, even the neat record Barrett meant to keep. A fresh crack sounded; they stepped back, and steam coiled over the mitten like faint breath. When they turned away, midday heat pressed against their backs while the mitten slowly cooled in the growing shade.
