English 原文
No bell marked the start yet, and the backstage hummed only with Drake’s own breath over the lamp’s faint buzz. Warm air, tasting of tin and faint caramel, drifted past his lips; the caramel lingered from a hard sweet tucked under his tongue earlier. Seldom had the lamp’s warmth tasted so metallic on Drake’s tongue, the flavor sharpening each time he swallowed. A row of leather figures leaned against the rack: a narrow aspen, a squatting toad, and a jagged sheet shaped like a cloudburst. The stickiness on his fingertips, ordinary evidence of a snack, glinted under the lamp and slid when he flexed his hand.
Drake aimed to elevate the storm tonight, lifting the cloudburst sheet until its dripping edge threatened to swallow the stage in silver grey. Josie crouched, whispered "Ready," then slipped toward the pulley holding the screen taut, a faint, warming ginger taste lingering in her breath. Sliding two salty bamboo rods through his fingers, Drake chose the flat aspen to stand beneath the looming cloud. Held close to the cloth, the aspen’s solitary bough appeared needle-thin, every edge sharp enough to suggest a quill. A handspan back, the same tree ballooned into an ardent blur that nudged his wrist forward, then made him recoil. He tested the distance twice, salt from his skin slowly collecting on his lip.
The bell finally rang, and bitter dust, tasting of charred walnut, drifted onto Drake’s tongue as the frame tremored under the lamp’s hum. He hoisted the cloudburst sheet, yet syrup on his thumb greased the rod, and the shadowy storm lurched downward in front of the waiting aspen. Drake paused, rolling the sweet residue against his teeth, the hesitation rippling through every silhouette now wavering on the cloth. The storm edge brushing the boards, his free hand caught a spare rod—thin, twine-wrapped—and wedged it beside the first to stiffen the frame. That improvised brace elevated the storm, but the lamp flared behind his wrist, magnifying sticky fingers into a giant claw that swallowed the tree’s highest bough.
Applause rippled beyond the screen; Drake dropped his chin, drew the claw away, and guided a softer drizzle across the scene until the racket calmed to a hush. He lowered both rods, their bamboo ends now tacky, and passed them to Josie without a word, the metallic aftertaste still coating his mouth. While she arranged the next figures, he slipped from the lamp’s circle, leaving the spare wedge propped against the frame where he could reach it later. Behind him, the twine-wrapped brace sagged under cooling leather, a bead of syrup glistening at its joint before falling onto the wooden stage. The drop spread into a dull, glossy stain; the bamboo rods lay crossed beside it, one edge sugar-shiny, the other pale from fresh dent marks.
