English 原文
Hardly had Ada slipped through the cedar doorway before the resin-laden hush folded around her like a still pond. The workshop felt tranquil, the single north window spilling pale light across the turning stand. A faint creak marked each slow rotation, and the curing cabinet’s brass hinges, filmed with green patina, looked as unmoving as ever. Beside the stand, a clay humidity tray released its regular drip, counting seconds in water-bright syllables. Beyond the turning stand, finished bowls glimmered on a cedar shelf, their surfaces so deep that the reflections inside them looked like dim lanterns under water.
Yet, as she set her brushes on the low stool, no drip punctuated the silence. The gauge needle rested below the red mark, and the air, though still sharp with sap, hinted at hidden dryness. It was the quiet tray that unsettled her, presenting a dilemma she had not rehearsed during last night’s meticulous notes. Were the humidity a notch lower, the thin film awaiting its next coat would crack instead of deepen. She lifted the tray; her gloves already on, she carried it to the sink and refilled it, grains of cedar dust floating on the surface.
Back at the cabinet, she paused, her palm on the latch. The piece inside bore months of quiet collaboration with Palmer, each transparent coat holding two sets of strokes. Only when she swung the door did she notice the hinge: a bright streak cut through the patina, raw brass catching the north light. Nowhere in her earlier visits had that streak existed, yet the metal clearly gleamed under a fresh scrape. Fine concentric ripples ran along the vessel’s rim, the light ricocheting between layers until the amber hue settled into something resembling sunlit honey. She traced the streak with a cotton swab, the room’s tranquil hush suddenly dense, as though a librarian had stepped between shelves and waited.
The ordinary hinge, which she had glanced at a hundred times, shifted meaning; someone else had opened the cabinet when the drip fell silent. Outside, a late breeze rattled bamboo chimes, their hollow taps echoing faintly through the open transom. A scent of damp cedar drifted upward, evoking the arboretum beyond the courtyard where resinous trunks stood in ordered rows. Ada turned toward the doorway, water still beading on the tray’s rim, her thoughts circling the new context without settling. Her fingertips hovered above the bright brass streak, the motionless hinge waiting for their weight.
