The Wedge Beneath the Barrel-

English 原文
Yvette ducked beneath the stone lintel and crossed onto the cool earth floor of the aging cellar. A potpourri of damp clay, mellow apple skins, and old oak drifted around her as the bulb above swayed in a slow arc. Barrels huddle along the left wall, their staves dark where juice had seeped and dried. She moved toward the second cradle, the one whose slight tilt she had noticed last season, and pressed a palm against the rim. Seldom had the cradle rocked during earlier visits, yet today the barrel quivered as though something inside breathed against the wood.
Her goal was simple: slip a pine wedge beneath the curved support and still the motion. Were the floor perfectly level, the wobble would vanish; instead, the wedge refused to slide farther than two fingers’ breadth. Her fingers still dusty, she withdrew the tool and tried to trace back the source of the imbalance, running a line from staves to stand to packed soil. Nothing obvious offered itself. Astrid’s footsteps rustled near the alcoves, and a soft voice broke the hush. “Heavy today?” Yvette nodded without glancing up. The unsteady barrel remained an unanswered question, so she set the wedge on a crate and turned away.
Together they began stacking empty glass demijohns, their shoulders brushing inside the narrow aisle. The task felt unrelated, a transplant from another list of chores, yet the rhythm of lifting, turning, and lowering bottles steadied the air. One bottle swung too wide and clinked the next; its gentle recoil echoed the barrel’s earlier shiver. Yvette paused, elbow half-raised. A faint crescent of sediment slid inside the glass, then settled at an angle. Only then did she notice the slight dip in the earthen floor where they stood, a shallow trough worn by years of dripping condensation. The dip aligned with the tilted cradle. What stopped her was the realisation that the floor itself, not the support, had shifted.
She returned to the barrel, lifted it fraction by fraction with a lever, and slipped the wedge into the newly discovered hollow rather than under the cradle. The barrel stilled. Yvette released the lever and stepped back, palms open. A single drop fell from the ceiling and tapped the bung wax, then another, the rhythm continuing long after her hands hung empty.
