English 原文
No distant generator rumble reached the gondola at the summit, leaving a quilted hush that pressed against Flora’s ears while her fingers pressed harder still against the cool railing. A folded blueprint sprawled across her lap, its paper edges lifting as the cabin’s self-leveling swing corrected itself with each muffled creak. She wanted one clean pencil line to mark where the wheel’s spoke met its outer rim, yet the wind leaned through the open pane and unsettled the sheet, as if reminding her that height resists straight edges. "Hold still," she whispered—not to the paper, but to the air—then slid sideways on the warm wooden bench, knees anchoring the corners, graphite poised.
Six hours earlier, sunlight angled through the slats of a derelict ticket booth where she had crouched among dust and dropped popcorn kernels. The metal skeleton of the Ferris wheel towered beyond the booth’s doorway, each girder throwing a striped shadow across her tape measure. Residual grease stained the flange she inspected; it left a faint grit on her thumb that she transferred to a notebook margin before sketching clearance figures. A crow hopped along a cable overhead, shook crumbs free, and departed without ceremony. Flora tore a bite from a rye roll for sustenance, then noted the stiffness in one joint: were the bolts shaved a hair thinner, the gondolas would travel more evenly.
Back in the sky-bound cabin, her pencil hovered yet descended no further. Seldom had the fairground looked so ordered; every stall arranged itself like squares on graph paper, even the abandoned booth now resembled a deliberate mark. She compared the measured angles etched earlier with the curve before her eyes, tilting the blueprint until horizon and ink nearly aligned. A sudden gust flipped the sheet, revealing on its reverse a residual charcoal rubbing of the wheel’s central cap—a smudge she did not remember making. Flora’s shoulders settled; she adjusted her grip, rotated the page, and traced the new arc that the rubbing proposed, knees steadying the paper through each faint swing.
The wheel began its descent, window frames catching a warmer amber as lamps below winked alive one by one. Flora refolded the blueprint along fresh creases, the graphite line now bending where no plan had intended, and slid it behind her back for safekeeping. A small rye crumb, earlier jammed into the notebook’s spine, broke loose and fell to the floor, leaving a dark speck against the pale plank that neither wind nor motion erased before the cabin eased toward the platform.
