English 原文
Every afternoon Corbin stepped from the sunlit doorway onto the slatted boards beside the indigo vat, yet today a thin, damp footprint smudged the wood where no one normally stood. The mark curved, narrowing toward the toe, then vanished at a knot in the plank; nowhere else on the floor had moisture settled so purposefully. He bent, palm hovering above the print, watching a pale rim deteriorate as the liquid seeped into the grain. A faint mineral scent rose, as though the vat itself were breathing through that single trace.
Across the workshop, Fiona guided a length of cloth through the vat in steady pulses—down, hold, lift, wring. Tongs resting against the stone, she twisted the fabric; blue-green liquid surged out, clashing with warmer air before splattering into the vat again. The wooden rack behind her trembled under accumulated weight, its lower bars starting to corrode where droplets collected day after day, the terrain of each rung mapped by darker stains. "Easy," she murmured, mostly to the cloth, and draped it quickly over an upper rail so the wind could accelerate the change from green to blue.
Corbin traced the floorboards toward the vat and found a second, fainter imprint crossing a shallow groove. Hardly had he knelt when another drop struck beside his boot, widening the earlier oval. He hesitated, fingers curled, then fetched the small oil lamp, holding it low; the light revealed no crack in the stone rim. He studied the growing pool as though it were a cryptic letter. A hush stretched, broken only by the rack’s creak—a quiet dispute between wood that wished to stay rigid and cloth that insisted on sagging heavier with each dip.
Fiona lifted a fresh panel, higher this time, and wind rolled the edge back on itself. Water slid off the corner, fell, and printed an exact replica of the first mark beside Corbin. The mystery shifted: the footprint was no prowler, only the splash striking at an angle. Corbin exhaled. "Here," he offered, sliding the lamp toward her elbow. She nodded once, slow recognition spreading through her shoulders. The reason the floor carried those shapes was the height of her lift. This time, she raised the cloth more gradually and draped it across the highest rail, the liquid sliding off in an even, unhurried ribbon.
