English 原文
Bea slid the composing stick along the case, metal letters clinking as her thumb sorted them into order already rehearsed during the walk here. Warm lamplight pressed against her shoulders, and the ink slab nearby glistened like wet stone in midsummer. Joel, plucky even before dawn, steadied a stack of cotton sheets beneath a slow puff of steam that drifted from their tea. Inside the rinse tin, a faint sediment of pigment rested untouched, thin as dust on pond water. The room carried a gentle damp heat, held close by the low ceiling above. Outside, a draft slipped under the door, brushing her ankles with sudden light coolness.
She locked the line of type and carried it to the bed, but the first pull of the lever left a smear where the title ought to stand. Ink, warmed by the lamp, behaved with playful mischief, refusing to sit still on the raised letters. Bea lifted the sheet, saw the blot, and pressed her lips together while heat climbed her forehead. Halfway toward the scrap pile, she paused; her thumb grazed the handle again, the earlier steady rhythm suddenly broken. Joel whispered nothing, only set another blank sheet ready, the air between them thick and warm as fresh bread. He glanced over and murmured, "It is still early; plenty of paper waits here."
She wiped the plate, noticing the ink had thinned where her cloth passed, a darker pool ringing a lighter center like a cove carved by tide. Her wrist rolled the rubber brayer again, the motion sliding forward from somewhere older than thought, the same rhythm once used to press seeds into garden soil. When she lifted the brayer, a ribbon of verdant shimmer threaded through the black, drawn from the sediment that had waited quietly at the tin’s bottom. Joel’s eyebrows arched; the room held its breath, the lamp humming hotter against the low beams. Bea met the question by sliding a fresh sheet in place, palms glowing from the lamp’s warmth. The second pull sounded firmer, the press delivering its thunk like distant thunder over fields.
The proof sheet emerged clear except for that single emerald vein curling through a word, neither ruin nor perfection, simply there. Joel lifted the corner, light sliding over the raised relief, and he laughed once, short and cool as the draft touching their ankles. Bea set the form back, unlatching the quoins with deliberate care; her fingers hovered above the ink tin, then drifted toward the brayer. Her hands lifted the brayer exactly as before, yet the air now carried a faint chill from the open door. Leather met palm, the familiar weight settling while cool night seeped across the floorboards.
