When a Sparrow Changed the Rhythm of the Pulp Vat-

English 原文
Every afternoon Inigo dipped the wooden mould into the cloudy vat, repeating the pulse he had learned by heart. Today a sparrow cut through the damp air before his first lift, landing on the press beam with brisk confidence. Its small head turned in steady intervals, matching the beater’s thump, as though sound and feather shared an unseen metronome. A wistful sigh of steam slipped from the warm trough, rose past the bird, and dissolved among the hanging sheets. The loft answered with hushed whispers: water passing through mesh, felt kissing felt, droplets ticking into the gutter’s narrow course. Beyond the window, clouds drifted slowly, yet inside every movement obeyed the measured beat of wood, water, and wing. Inigo paused, noticing the sparrow’s beak touch the damp wood in the exact rhythm his wrists aimed to keep.
He lowered the mould again, letting the pulp cover the wire like pale clouds; the water drank everything and looked unchanged. Another scoop followed, then another, each addition swallowed without protest, as though the vat adored quiet compromise between fullness and stillness. Above, the sparrow shifted, showering the surface with flecks of bark it had shaken free from the rafters. The specks floated, disappeared, and he kept working; scoop, level, shake, flip—always the same cadence inside that narrow corridor of presses. Light from the window traced its own measure, returning every few seconds to glaze the vat with a yearning glance of pale gold. Yet the sheet on his frame appeared no thicker, and the drip beneath kept steady, neither faster nor slower. He wondered whether patience or pulp would surrender first, and his shoulders rose and fell within the workshop’s endless beat.
The eighth scoop settled; suddenly a thin skin blossomed across the vat, refusing to sink, shimmering like wet parchment. Water slowed to single drops, their once predictable pulse faltering, and the sparrow lifted its wings in nervous stutter. Inigo’s hands hovered above the mould; a pause broke the rhythm, the first real silence since he entered the loft. He considered tilting the mould to break the film, then stopped, noticing the bird more than the sheet. The sparrow dipped, plucked a tuft from the floating skin, and darted upward, threading the fiber among rafters. A pale gap spread where the tuft had been, widening with tiny ripples that folded light into irregular prisms. Water pooled atop the reluctant film, and Inigo’s fingertips hovered above the quivering sheet.
